Hi, I'm Nick. I am a certified canine behaviourist, balanced dog trainer, and former psychotherapist based near Brockwell Park in Brixton, SW2.

Slip lead training in Brixton, SW2

A Balanced Approach to Dog Training: Providing the positive rewards they love and the clear structure they need.

My training method is balanced. I provide the positive rewards your dog loves alongside the structured clarity and clear boundaries they genuinely need to thrive.

True communication requires fair accountability. This means using positive reinforcement to teach new habits, combined with calm, precise corrections to stop unwanted behaviours.

My Approach to Training Tools

I believe in using the simplest, most humane tools to communicate effectively with your dog:

  • What I Use: A standard slip lead to provide gentle, clear guidance and fair boundary setting.

  • What I Do Not Use: I do not use prong collars or electronic collars (e-collars).

For me, balance is never about punishment. It is about honest, fair communication that gives your dog the peace of mind they are looking for.

How I Can Help You & Your Dog

Behaviour Modification & Obedience Training

I get to the root of your dog's behaviour and resolve it directly in the real world. To keep things realistic and low-stress, we start in your home or local park, progressing to busier environments as your dog develops.

I can help you resolve:

  • Trigger Reactivity: Stopping barking, lunging, and over-excitement around dogs, people, bikes, or traffic.

  • Loose Lead Walking: Resolving extreme lead pulling, dragging, and anchoring/freezing.

  • Severe Behavioural Issues: Managing anxiety, aggression, resource guarding, and separation anxiety.

  • Everyday Manners: Fixing excessive barking, jumping up, and building core obedience.

Specialist Walk & Train (Solo Walks)

Operating Monday to Friday, this is a premium, strictly one-on-one training walk where I collect your dog from your home. It is the perfect alternative for dogs that cannot cope with standard group pack walks, or for owners who want expert handling.

During our dedicated training hour, we actively work on:

  • Real-World Reactivity: Actively reducing triggers and building emotional regulation.

  • Lead Manners: Constant practice with loose lead walking and focus.

  • Impulse Control: Safe, long-line recall training and general obedience.

  • Social Skills: Navigating challenging situations calmly for your total peace of mind.

Foundational Puppy Training

The early weeks matter more than most people realise. Because I visit you directly, this foundational coaching is entirely tailored to your specific home layout, routine, and daily lifestyle.

We will get you off to the best possible start by covering:

  • Home Set-Up: Crate training, toilet training, and structuring essential puppy naps.

  • Prevention: Stopping jumping up and establishing clear household boundaries.

  • Outdoor Skills: Safe socialising, proper diet, and early loose lead walking.

Online Sessions

You can easily access my services remotely from anywhere outside my catchment area.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • It means your dog gets the best of both worlds: clear boundaries and high rewards. We use positive reinforcement (treats, praise, play) to teach and reward good behaviors. We also use calm, minimal, and fair corrections to instantly stop unwanted behaviors like lunging, jumping, or severe pulling. This balanced approach gives your dog the structured clarity they need to feel safe and relaxed.

  • A standard slip lead is a gentle, lightweight, and highly effective communication tool. It allows me to deliver micro-signals and precise feedback to your dog with minimal physical effort. It helps your dog learn to walk on a loose lead by providing immediate clarity when they pull and instant slack the moment they yield.

  • No. I do not use prong collars, pinch collars, or electronic shock collars (e-collars). While these tools are common in some balanced training circles, I find them unnecessary for my work. My focus is on using the simplest, most humane tools combined with psychological clarity to reshape your relationship with your dog.

  • No, quite the opposite. Think of a correction as a gentle boundary, not a punishment. Just like humans, dogs thrive when they know exactly where the line is. By pairing clear boundaries with heavy positive rewards, your dog will actually become more relaxed, confident, and securely bonded to you because they finally understand what is expected of them.

  • We look at both ends of the lead. First, we analyse your dog’s behaviour and your current communication style. Then, I coach you through practical, hands-on handling techniques using the slip lead and reward systems. You will receive a personalised, structured plan after the session, alongside my ongoing support to ensure lasting change.

  • We typically schedule your follow-up session 1 to 2 weeks after our first meeting. This gives you plenty of time to practice your new techniques and implement our strategies, while allowing your dog the necessary space to adjust and learn. During our next session, we will review what worked well and address any remaining strugles—allowing us to evaluate, adapt, and evolve our training plan as we go.

  • Based near Brockwell Park (SW2), I cover a 4-mile radius including Brixton, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Clapham, Balham, Stockwell, Streatham, Camberwell, and Peckham. We can meet directly at your home or local park. If you live outside this catchment area, we can easily connect online. Alternatively, if you prefer hands-on help, you can travel to Brixton to meet at the wonderful Brockwell Park.

  • As a mobile trainer cycling between sessions, I am well-prepared for classic British weather! Sessions will go ahead in normal wind and rain. However, if conditions become severe or unsafe for cycling and outdoor training—such as torrential downpours, thunderstorms, extreme ice, or dangerous summer heatwaves—I will contact you as early as possible. In those cases, we will either move the session indoors to your home or reschedule for another day.

  • To give you and your dog the highest quality support, I need to see how your dog actually behaves in their everyday environment. Seeing a dog in a strange house doesn't give a realistic picture of their challenges. Observing them in their own home or on their usual local walking routes allows me to spot the exact triggers and layout choices affecting their behaviour, creating a far more effective training plan.

  • No. My Walk & Train service is strictly one-on-one. I specialise in dogs that find the world a bit overwhelming—whether they are heavy pullers, highly anxious rescues, or reactive to other dogs, people or anything else. Group walks or pack environments can quickly push these dogs over their stress threshold. Keeping things solo ensures my absolute focus is on your dog's safety, body language, and real-time real world training.

  • My Walk & Train service operates from Monday to Friday only. If you feel you need hands-on support over the weekend, I recommend starting with my standard two-step initial process (the Diagnostic Consultation and Practical Coaching Session), which we can look at scheduling together.

  • For the first few sessions and to handover, yes. It is vital that we build a seamless handover routine so your dog feels safe and secure when I collect them. Once your dog is completely comfortable with me and we have a established a reliable routine, we can discuss key-holding arrangements if you need me to collect them while you are at work.

  • es. Reactivity reduction and loose lead walking are my core specialties. My relationship-centred approach tackles root triggers immediately using clear communication, restoring trust between you and your dog so you can enjoy peaceful walks again.

“Nick is fantastic, his calm nature relaxed our very anxious lab (and me) very quickly and in just the first couple of hours I feel so much more confident. Nick took the time to really understand our home dynamic and how it affects Moss and her interactions inside and outside the home.”
